Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest-serving senator in American history, died Monday at the age of 92, a spokesman for the family said.

Byrd, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 1959, had been plagued by health problems in recent years and was confined to a wheelchair. He had skipped several votes in Congress in the past months.

Jesse Jacobs, a family spokesman, said Byrd died peacefully at about 3 a.m. at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

He was the oldest member of the 111th Congress.

The passing of Sen. Byrd will not affect the balance of power in the Senate. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, a Democrat, will appoint a replacement senator to serve out the remainder of Byrd's term, which ends in 2012.

Statements from his longtime colleagues poured out Monday morning, as fellow senators remembered Byrd as a steadfast presence in the chamber and a veritable tome of knowledge on how the Senate works.

"The people of West Virginia have lost a dedicated public servant, and America has lost a great defender of its most precious traditions," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a written statement. "He was the foremost guardian of the Senate's complex rules, procedures and customs, and as leader of both the majority and the minority caucuses in the Senate he knew better than most that legislation is the art of compromise. By virtue of his endurance, Robert Byrd knew and worked with many of the greats of the United States Senate."

President Obama said in a statement that the country has "lost a voice of principle and reason" with Byrd's death.

"He had the courage to stand firm in his principles, but also the courage to change over time," Obama said, in a veiled reference to his controversial past.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a former senator, called Byrd the "heart and soul" of the chamber.

"It is almost impossible to imagine the United States Senate without Robert Byrd," she said.

Fresh off their 16th NBA championship a week earlier, the Los Angeles Lakers selected forward Devin Ebanks from West Virginia in the second round of Thursday's NBA draft with with No. 43 overall pick.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Ebanks played two seasons with the Mountaineers and had a career average of 11.2 points per game. He was named to the All-Big East Conference third team last season, and made the Big East All-Rookie and All-Tournament teams as a freshman.

During his first season, Ebanks grabbed 273 rebounds, the second most in school history. He has a reputation as a strong defender and possesses a decent mid-range game, but needs to improve his outside shooting. He made only 10 percent of his 3-point attempts last season.

The Lakers selected Derrick Caracter, a 6-9 forward from Texas El Paso, with the No. 58 overall selection.

"I'm so happy right now, you don't understand," Ebanks said in a conference call with reporters. "I get to play with the best player in the world, Kobe Bryant."

Ebanks also said he has no problem focusing on defense.

"That's what I do," he said. "I take defense very seriously and I take it personally."

For the Queens native, joining the Lakers also means a reunion with players he has known for years.

"Lamar Odom, my uncle grew up with him," Ebanks said. "He's from my neighborhood. Ron Artest [is] right there. I live two minutes away from Ron Artest and 10 minutes from Lamar, so I see those guys all the time. Having a chance to play with them is a great opportunity."

As a second-round pick, there's no guarantee Ebanks will make the final roster, much less see much time for a team looking to win its third consecutive championship. The value of being part of an elite team, however, wasn't lost on Ebanks.

"I have a whole bunch of stuff to learn about the NBA. And what better team for it to be than the Lakers?" Ebanks said. "I'm playing for the best team in the world right now. I'll go in there and try to learn from some veterans. Hopefully, my career will take off from there."

JULIA Gillard has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia, after saying she had to "take control and to ensure that the government got back on track".

"It was necessary for me to take this step to take control and to ensure that the government got back on track,'' Ms Gillard said, adding it was a view she had come to in recent days.

Ms Gillard said she would be fighting the next election with "every ounce'' of her being.

"I took this step in part because I was so determined, so determined, to make sure at the next election this nation does not endorse a path that would see cutbacks to our schools, jeopardising the thing that I most profoundly believe in,'' she said.

Ms Gillard promised to pull the controversial, government-funded mining tax ads and declared that she would not move into the Lodge unless she was elected Prime Minister at a general election.

Ms Gillard said she accepted her new role with "the greatest humility, resolve and enthusiasm''.

At a media conference in Parliament House, Ms Gillard told a fevered contingent of media she was "truly honoured'' to become prime minister, after Kevin Rudd stood aside.

"Can I say Australians one and all, it's with the greatest, humility, resolve and enthusiasm that I sought the endorsement of my colleagues to be the Labor leader and to be the prime minister for this country,'' she said.
"I have accepted that endorsement.''

"I am utterly committed to the service of our people,'' she said.

The Welsh-born Ms Gillard grew up in South Australia. There, she said, her parents taught her the value of hard work, respect and doing your bit for the community. "It is these values that will guide me as Australia's prime minister,'' she said.

South Africans are no exception, as those who have descended on the country for this year's FIFA Confederations Cup have discovered. 

The vuvuzela is a vociferous air horn that reverberates around arenas with rare energy. It is also a proud and permanent symbol of its patrons.

"Without the vuvuzela, I don't think I would be able to enjoy football," said Sadaam Maake, one of South African football's celebrity followers. "It brings a special feeling to the stadiums. It is something that makes the fans want to get behind their team."

The vuvuzela was originally made from a kudu horn. Folklore has it that, in the ancient days, it was used to summon people to gatherings. Over the last 15 years, the sight and sound of the instrument being blown at games has evolved into an emblem of hope and unity for many South Africans.

"When we started the vuvuzela, there was so much sadness in our country in those years and it brought so much joy," explained Mzion Mofokeng, another iconic football enthusiast. "All of a sudden people would go to the stadiums because of this instrument that was able to get fans on their feet and start cheering. For few hours, they would forget about the reality in our society and enjoy the sound.

However, Mofokeng did add a warning: "In order for it to produce a nice sound, someone must know how to blow it. It must be done with a controlled voice and you need some art for that."

Abby Sunderland found alive- Teenage sailor Abby Sunderland has been found.

A Qantas Airbus A330 sent from Perth to search for the 16-year-old sailor has located her in the Indian Ocean.

Her father, Laurence Sunderland, told Fairfax Radio his daughter was ‘‘fine’’.

‘‘Abby’s fine... the vessel is upright, the weather conditions are abating and [searchers] actually had communication via radio,’’ Mr Sunderland said.

‘‘We’ve heard the fishing vessel that’s been diverted will rendezvous with her tomorrow and there will be a rescue then.’’

Earlier today, Mr Sunderland said the fate of his daughter, whose emergency beacons were activated in treacherous seas more than 3000 kilometres off the Australian coast, was "in God's hands".

According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the position transmitted by the sailor’s emergency GPS beacon was 40 degrees 48 minutes south of the equator and longitude 74 degrees 58 minutes east of the prime meridian - about 2033 nautical miles west-south-west from Perth in the central southern Indian Ocean.

Mr Sunderland, who is Australian and is now based in California with his family, said he spoke to Abby five or six times by phone yesterday to help fix a problem with the boat’s engine, but shortly after the last call dropped out the family learnt an emergency device had gone off.

It was one of two which were reported to have been set off.

Jimmy Dean dies- Country music legend Jimmy Dean, who sang the country crossover hit "Big Bad John" and later became known for his sausage brand, has died, according to The Associated Press. He was 81.

Dean died Sunday at his home on his 200-acre estate near Richmond, Va., wife Donna Meade Dean told the AP. Though he had health problems, she said his death came as a shock because he was still functioning well. She said Dean was eating in front of the television and she found him unresponsive when she returned in to the room.

A Texas native, Dean, who dropped out of school after ninth grade, experienced great success in the entertainment industry in the 1950s and '60s, including his nationally televised The Jimmy Dean Show.

Dean, who fronted his Texas Wildcats band, had his first national hit in the early 1950s, "Bummin' Around" and earned a Grammy for "Big Bad John" in 1961. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame earlier this year and was to be inducted in October.

Dean became a headliner at such places as Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl as well as the Las Vegas strip. He served as a guest host on The Tonight Show, and acted in various TV and film roles, including 1971's Diamonds Are Forever — as James Bond's ally, reclusive billionaire Willard Whyte.

He started the Jimmy Dean Meat Co. in 1969 and sold it to Sara Lee Corp. in 1984.

His fortune was estimated at $75 million in the early '90s, and Dean said he learned to be smart with his finances.

"I've seen so many people in this business that made a fortune," he told the AP in 2004. "They get old and broke and can't make any money. ... I tell you something ... no one's going to play a benefit for Jimmy Dean."

Dean is survived by his wife, three children, and two grandchildren.

Jackie Chan will play the wise kung-fu master in a Hollywood-Chinese remake of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid" that kicked off filming in the Chinese capital at the weekend, a movie company publicist said Monday.

Chan's young disciple in "Kung Fu Kid" will be played by Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood superstars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, China Film Group spokesman Weng Li told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

In "The Karate Kid," Pat Morita plays the iconic building handyman Mr. Miyagi who trains one of his young tenants, portrayed by Ralph Macchio, into an accomplished fighter.

The co-production between the state-run China Film Group and Columbia Pictures started shooting Saturday in Beijing, Weng said.

"Kung Fu Kid" is being directed by Harald Zwart, who also directed "One Night at McCool's" and "The Pink Panther 2," Solon So, the chief executive of Chan's company, JC Group, told the AP.

Chan and Smith, along with Smith's parents and sister Willow, attended a traditional Chinese ceremony to mark the start of the shoot Saturday. Photos on China Film Group's movie news Web site show the Smith family and Chan holding incense sticks.

Will Smith _ one of the film's producers _ Chan, Zwart and others symbolically removed a piece of red cloth covering a movie camera, after which Smith gave Chan a hug, according to video posted on Chinese news Web site Sina.com. His hair done in a huge Afro and wearing a bright red track jacket and blue pants, Jaden Smith stood and waved when he was introduced. His father ruffled his hair when he sat down.

Former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable was found dead in his Aberdare, South Wales home at 5:30 in the morning today, June 7. According to Spinner, authorities have yet to establish a cause of death, but they did note that no suspicious circumstances have been discovered so far in the case.

Stuart formed Stereophonics in 1992 along with Kelly and Richard Jones and stayed with the band until 2003. After a series of disagreements over Cable's admitted drug and alcohol problems, as well as his blossoming television and radio career, Stuart left the band. During his tenure the band released four studio albums, each certified multi-platinum in the United Kingdom, and were chosen as Best New Group at the 1998 Brit Awards.

Cable went on to host a number of television and radio shows, most recently BBC Wales' 'Saturday Night Show,' which featured contemporary and classic rock music. In 2009, he published a memoir, 'Demons and Cocktails,' chronicling his time with Stereophonics and his struggles with addiction. Cable had also recently been performing with a new band, named Killing for Company.

Mike Peters of the Alarm, who toured with Killing for Company, told the BBC, "He was supposed to be joining us for Rhondda Rocks. I will remember him as someone who was so alive - I can't believe he's gone. I don't know what the circumstances are but it's a real tragedy. He was always smiling and laughing and great to be around. He had lots of energy and couldn't wait for the next day to come around. He was a larger than life character who seemed to be a driving force behind the personality of the Stereophonics."

John Wooden, a staid Midwesterner who migrated to U.C.L.A. and became college basketball’s most successful coach, earning the nickname the Wizard of Westwood and an enduring place in sports history, died Friday at Ronald Reagan U.C.L.A. Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since May 26. He was 99.
His death was announced by the university.

Wooden created a sports dynasty against which all others are compared, and usually pale. His teams at U.C.L.A. won 10 national championships in a 12-season stretch from 1964 to 1975. From 1971 to 1974, U.C.L.A. won 88 consecutive games, still the N.C.A.A. record.

Four of Wooden’s teams finished with 30-0 records, including his first championship team, which featured no starters taller than 6 feet 5 inches.

Three of his other championship teams were anchored by the 7-foot-2 center Lew Alcindor, who later changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Two others were led by center Bill Walton, a three-time national player of the year.

Wooden retired after U.C.L.A.’s 1975 championship victory over Kentucky. A slight man hugely popular for his winning record and his understated approach, he ultimately became viewed as a kind of sage for both basketball and life, a symbol of both excellence and simpler times.

Eighteen years ago, Jeremy Roenick was 22 years old, in his fourth full NHL season and taking the Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup Final. Behind the young center's 53 goals and 103 points that year, they were the last Blackhawks team to have a chance to play for hockey's Holy Grail. That year, the Hawks would win 11 straight playoff games, only to be swept in four games by the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Fast forward and Roenick was in the building as an analyst for NBC Wednesday night for the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup victory. The only chance Roenick had to play for the Cup was back then in 1992.

After the final buzzer sounded and the Blackhawks were celebrating on the ice, NBC cut back to the in-arena studio where Roenick was seated with Mike Milbury and Dan Patrick. Both Milbury and Roenick reflected on the game, with Roenick recalling an upset young fan from '92 after the Hawks had lost. Patrick asked Roenick to explain his emotions further and he understandably had trouble holding them in.

Journalist Helen Thomas' recent remarks about Jews in Israel were "offensive," President Obama said in an interview that aired this morning.


The 89-year-old White House correspondent retired yesterday after coming under scrutiny for saying that Jews in Israel should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to Germany and Poland.


Mr. Obama said on NBC's "Today Show" that Thomas' comments were "out of line" but added that it was a "shame" her long, much-celebrated career had to end in controversy. He called her retirement "the right decision."


Thomas had covered the White House since 1960 but served as a columnist for Hearst News Service for about the past decade. She was known as a trailblazer for women. As a columnist, she was also known for expressing her liberal views.


In the interview, the president also emphasized how seriously he took the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, remarking that if BP CEO Tony Hayward were working for him, he would have fired him by now. When asked by Matt Lauer if this was the time to "kick some butt," Mr. Obama said he's working with experts to address the oil spill and to find out "whose ass to kick."


Mr. Obama also weighed in on lighter issues like the botched umpire call that ruined Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga's perfect baseball game last week. The umpire mistakenly called a baserunner safe in what would have been the final out of a game in which no runners made it on base.


The incident puts the spotlight on whether Major League Baseball should "take a look" at its instant replay policy, the president said, but he said Commissioner Bud Selig "made the right call" in not awarding a perfect game after the fact.

Boxing's return to Yankee Stadium was memorable in a bizarre manner, as Miguel Cotto stopped a hobbled but incredibly gutsy Yuri Foreman in nine rounds to win the WBA junior middleweight title.

Cotto (33-2, 28 KO) did largely dominate the fight, wobbling Foreman (28-1, 8 KO) many times early on with jabs and right hands. But the fight turned for sure when Foreman's knee gave out as he slipped on one of those idiotic ring logos in the seventh round.

After Foreman's knee gave out twice in the seventh and clearly wasn't improving in the eighth, his corner threw in the towel. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. refused the towel, and refused to disqualify Foreman when trainer Joe Grier entered the ring. The eighth round was mildly insane, really, and made no sense. But in the ninth, Cotto landed a vicious left to the body that ended the night.

Foreman lost the fight and wasn't particularly competitive, but he gained a lot of respect, I'm guessing, for a show of great bravery and guts. He wanted to lose his belt, not have it taken from him. He went out and lost it. He tried to war with Cotto on one leg, basically, and couldn't do it.

From the get-go, Miguel Cotto was the obviously more powerful and more complete fighter. Yuri Foreman is a great story and a damn good guy, but Cotto was focused, on-point, and in a lot of ways, back to what he did well before. He didn't attack to the body greatly, but did good work there, and was able to shake Foreman up consistently.

In the co-feature, Vanes Martirosyan was able to beat "Mean" Joe Greene by scores of 98-91 and 96-93 (twice). The fight was underwhelming from both, with Greene looking quite bad, frankly, and Martirosyan looking little more than competent.

Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his left knee in training.

The England captain broke down after a tackle in the final few minutes of his team's first training session since landing in South Africa, and was taken to hospital for a scan.

The scan revealed knee ligament damage and the 31-year-old will take no part in the World Cup.

"Rio has been ruled out for four to six weeks and will therefore unfortunately miss the World Cup," said the FA in a statement. "Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson has been contacted today and will fly to South Africa on Friday evening."

Steven Gerrard will be promoted to the captaincy.

"It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio," said the England manager Fabio Capello. "It was an accidental injury in training, but had nothing to do with the pitch."

Ferdinand had an injury-hit season at Manchester United, being laid low for considerable periods with back and groin problems.

But he was happy with his fitness at the end of the season and during England's two-week training camp in Austria before coming through the friendly internationals with Mexico and Japan unscathed.

Capello's alternatives in the current squad are West Ham's Matthew Upson and Tottenham's Ledley King.

Upson has started nine of the last 17 internationals while King has forced his way into Capello's thinking despite his long-term knee problem.

King has impressed for Tottenham this season although by his own admission he looked far from convincing in the recent friendly with Mexico at Wembley.

Dawson was named in Capello's initial party of 30 for the finals but was excluded from the final 23 after not playing against either Mexico at Wembley or Japan in Graz. He has had an outstanding season at Tottenham, often alongside King.

Gary Coleman is dead. He was taken off life support on Friday morning and passed away, both TMZ and Radaronline.com first reported. His wife Shannon Price and her father were at the hospital.

Coleman died Friday at 12:05 PM MDT.

Coleman, 42, was best known for his role as Arnold Jackson on "Diff'rent Strokes." Word got out that he was hospitalized Thursday and in critical condition.

Former UCLA basketball coach and Hall of Famer John Wooden was reportedly hospitalized in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

Los Angeles television station KCAL and the Los Angeles Times reported that the 99-year-old Wooden was in "grave" condition at UCLA Medical Center.

The Times cited an anonymous school source who said Wooden's health has been an issue in recent weeks and that he was briefly hospitalized about a month ago.

UCLA spokesman Marc Dellins told The Associated Press that he spoke to a Wooden family member Thursday evening and that the family asked that no other information about Wooden be released.

UCLA Medical Center spokeswoman Roxanne Moster said she couldn't confirm whether Wooden was there or not because it would be a "violation of medical privacy laws."

Family members couldn't be reached for comment Thursday by the AP.

Wooden led the Bruins to 10 NCAA championships – at one time winning seven in a row – during a 27-year run that ended with his team cutting down the nets one last time in 1975.

The Bruins won 88 consecutive games from 1971-74 and 38 consecutive NCAA tournament games from 1964-74, both records.

NBA commissioner David Stern was asked about Wooden's contributions to the sport of basketball before Game 1 of the NBA finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics on Thursday night.

They counted on the bulldozer to stop.

"I couldn't believe it. I was sure the bulldozer would stop," said Tom Dale, 18, a member of Rachel Corrie's group. "When we arrived she was still alive but had blood all over her face."

They counted on the Israelis' basic human values.

"[The Israeli troops] have shot over our heads, and shot near our feet — they have fired tear gas at us," said Michael Shaik, the group's media coordinator. "But we thought we had an understanding. We didn't think they would kill us."

They dared to protest because they know the Israelis play by civilized rules, rules not binding on the people they came to support. But no rule can protect people from their own foolishness.

On March 16, 2003, in the town of Rafah in southern Gaza, Rachel Corrie, 23, an "international peace protester," dropped to her knees in front of an Israeli bulldozer. The bulldozer was clearing away foliage used to hide bombs. She expected it to stop, but it kept moving, trapping her under its tracks. An ambulance took her to Ajar hospital, where she died.

The protesters called it murder, even though they repeatedly defied warnings to leave the area, and even though a preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the bulldozer could not see Rachel Corrie. According to the inquiry, "the windows of the bulletproof bulldozer are very small and the visibility is very limited, and the bulldozer operator did not see the woman."

Nevertheless the murder charge has persisted. The group to which Rachel Corrie belonged, the International Solidarity Movement, even published "before" and "after" pictures claiming to show that the bulldozer operator could in fact see her.

These pictures have been shown to be a hoax. The "before" picture shows Rachel standing in front of the bulldozer with a megaphone, some distance away and foreshortened by perspective, making her appear to be in clear sight of the bulldozer. The presentation also makes it appear that this took place immediately before the incident. However, the photographer himself later admitted that no one with a camera had been present at the site just before Rachel's accident, that the picture with the megaphone had actually been taken hours earlier, and that at the time of the accident Rachel was not in sight of the driver. An examination of the pictures themselves, noting, for example, the difference in the color of the sky, shows they could not have been taken close to the same point in time.(1) In addition, the bulldozers shown in these supposed "before" and "after" pictures are not the same.(2)

Jose Mourinho is set to coach Real Madrid in a deal between European soccer powers, leaving Inter Milan less than a week after guiding the Italian club to the Champions League title.
The agreement was announced after a meeting in Milan between Madrid president Florentino Perez and Inter counterpart Massimo Moratti. Madrid will pay $19 million in two installments, the Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport said.

Real Madrid said Mourinho will be introduced Monday at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. He replaces Manuel Pelligrini, who was fired Wednesday.

Mourinho confirmed he wanted to join Madrid after Inter beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Spanish capital last Saturday to win the Champions League.

In two years with Inter, Mourinho led the club to two league titles, one Italian cup and its first European Cup since 1965. Before that, he led Chelsea to two Premier League titles. He also won the Champions League with FC Porto of Portugal in 2004.

Mourinho is a defensive-minded coach and questions have been raised over how he will blend the attacking talents of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

"We have to know what we have and apply it in the best possible way to create damage," Mourinho told the Spanish daily AS. "Madrid has Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka who are very good on one-on-ones. We have to find a style of play that allows them to do that. The principles of play depend on the players you have."

Madrid has won nine European Cups but its last Champions League triumph came in 2002. Last summer, Madrid spent large sums on Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema but failed to progress past the first knockout round of the Champions League.

"I think Madrid have signed me because they know that they can demand aims in the short term, but that I am also capable of leaving a base for the future," Mourinho said.

If there's one person who's not afraid to grab a chance to bask in the limelight it's Paris Hilton.

The heiress is well known for her vanity, so it hardly a surprise that she reveled in the opportunity to get up on stage during a performance by R'n'B star Ne-Yo.

The singer was performing at Surrender nightclub in Las Vegas when he ventured into the audience and found Miss Hilton, 29, before inviting her onstage to show off her moves.

And, while Ne-Yo sang Miss Independent, Paris performed a rather raunchy routine which involved pulling her short gold and black dress up and almost showing her backside to the audience at the Las Vegas club.

Of course, the socialite was thrilled with her moment in the spotlight, taking to her Twitter page to share her delight.

She tweeted: 'So amazing last night when Ne-Yo took me onstage during his performance of my favourite song Miss Independent. I love when lyrics ring true.'

Ne-Yo took centre stage for a 20-minute performance under the stars for the opening of the new club.

It was during his first song that he grabbed Paris from the audience and brought her onstage to dance to his hit.

Ne-Yo also sang Sexy Love, Closer and new song, Beautiful Monster, from his upcoming album Libra Scale - which is due for release in September this year.

He told the crowd it was the first time he had performed the new single in front of an audience.

After his performance, the Las Vegas native headed back to a second-story cabana, where he was seen drinking Grey Goose and Red Bull with an entourage of more than a dozen friends.

Meanwhile Paris has revealed she is relishing life as a singleton since her split with ex-boyfriend Hills star Doug Reinhardt.

Following the nasty split, she confirmed that she is definitely single and enjoying her life.

She said: '[I'm] One hundred percent single and I'm really enjoying it. I've never been single in my life and I've never been happier.
